What is pet retail analytics?
The discipline of using granular retail data to make better commercial decisions in the pet category, and why it's different from the panel data most pet brands already buy.
Pet retail analytics is the use of SKU-level retail data (distribution, on-shelf availability, pricing, promotional activity and share of market) to inform commercial decisions in the pet category. Where syndicated panels report topline category movement monthly or quarterly, pet retail analytics works at SKU × store × week granularity: which products are stocked where, whether they were actually on shelf, at what price, and how fast they sold. Petview is a UK pet retail analytics platform, purpose-built for pet speciality retail and refreshed weekly.
What pet retail analytics covers
Five measures do most of the work in pet retail analytics. Each answers a commercial question that topline category data cannot.
| Measure | Commercial question it answers |
|---|---|
| Distribution | Which of my SKUs are ranged in which stores, and where are the gaps versus my category benchmark? |
| Availability | Of the stores that range my SKU, how many actually had it on shelf this week, and what did the gaps cost? |
| Rate of sale | How fast does each SKU sell per store per week, and how does that compare with the products beside it on shelf? |
| Pricing & promotion | What price was actually charged, where, and did promotional investment deliver measurable uplift? |
| Share of market | How is my share moving within sub-categories, week by week rather than quarter by quarter? |
Why the pet category needs its own analytics
Generalist retail data was built for grocery. The pet category behaves differently in ways that matter commercially: pet speciality retail carries far deeper ranges per category than grocery, own-label dynamics are stronger, purchase cycles are driven by the pet rather than the household, and the specialist channel (the stores dedicated to pet) is where range decisions are made with the most granularity.
Syndicated panels cover pet as one category among hundreds, typically at topline level. That leaves pet brands negotiating range reviews and JBPs with less evidence than their grocery counterparts take into a Tesco meeting. Pet retail analytics closes that gap.
Who uses it
- Commercial directors and GMs: category evidence for board reporting, annual planning and retailer negotiations.
- Category and insight managers: range review preparation, distribution gap analysis, sub-category benchmarking.
- National account managers: weekly trading reviews, availability escalations, promotional post-audits.
- Retail buying and merchandising teams: a shared evidence base for supplier conversations, so meetings start from the same facts.
