Comparison

The data sources pet category teams actually use.

Every source in this table is good at something. The mistake is asking one of them to do another's job.

The short version

UK pet brands typically draw on four data sources: syndicated panels for cross-channel context, retailer EPOS reports and supplier portals for their own sales, internal depletion data for supply, and pet retail analytics for category-wide execution detail. Petview sits in the fourth group: SKU × store × week visibility of distribution, availability, pricing and share across UK pet speciality retail, the layer the other three don't reach.

Side by side

SourceStrong atFalls short on
Syndicated panels
(NielsenIQ, Circana, Kantar)
Cross-channel category context, long trend history, household purchase behaviour, methodological rigour at national level Store-level detail, weekly cadence in speciality channels, SKU-level distribution and availability; pet is one category among hundreds
Retailer EPOS reports Your own sales in that retailer, official numbers for that trading relationship The category around you: competitor distribution, benchmarks, switching; often delayed, formats vary by retailer
Supplier portals Operational self-service: your listings, your orders, your service levels Category context of any kind; analysis stops at your own range
Your own depletions What you shipped, where, and when: the supply-side truth What actually sold through, on-shelf reality, consumer-facing price
Pet retail analytics
(Petview)
SKU × store × week distribution, availability, pricing and share across the whole category in UK pet speciality, refreshed weekly, shared by brands and retailers Cross-channel totals and household behaviour (that's panel territory); launching with bricks-and-mortar pet speciality coverage, widening from 2027

How mature teams combine them

The pattern we see in well-run commercial teams: panels set the national context once a quarter; EPOS reports and portals reconcile the trading relationship; depletions run supply; and retail analytics runs the week (availability exceptions, share movement, distribution changes) and arms the category argument when the range review lands.

The gap Petview was built to close is specific: before it, no source gave UK pet speciality both sides of the shelf a shared, SKU-level, weekly view of the same category. Range reviews, JBPs and weekly trading all happen at that level of detail, which is why the platform is priced for challengers as well as majors.

A note on rigour

Comparison tables from vendors deserve scepticism, including this one. Our claim is deliberately narrow: Petview does not replace panel data, and panels do not reach what Petview covers.
